10 ways to improve onboarding in your product.
Want some ideas on boosting your onboarding experience? Check out these tips.
At Product Party, we love to cover different ways that you can build better features, identify the best way to prioritize features and find ways to improve relationships with your users, teams, and stakeholders.
However, one thing we haven’t covered explicitly is some ways you can help improve your users' experience at one of the most crucial times: at the beginning stages of their use of your product.
Today, we will cover ten things to consider when revisiting the onboarding of users onto your product.
1 - Utilize Data Analytics
You might need to implement tools, but I strongly encourage leveraging user data to create personalized onboarding experiences tailored to individual needs and preferences.
2 - Incorporate Gamification
Consider applying game design elements like rewards, challenges, and leaderboards to make the onboarding process engaging and fun.
Everyone loves checking a box… and #winning.
3 - Implement Augmented Reality (AR)
You could explore adding augmented reality (AR) to the process if your product warrants it.
AR can be used for interactive tutorials and real-world overlays, offering an immersive learning experience.
4 - Leverage Interactive Demos
If you happen to incorporate them, you can consider replacing your static walkthroughs with interactive demos that allow users to learn by doing, enhancing retention and engagement.
5 - Offer In-App Support
To assist users during onboarding, layer in easy access to support within the app, such as chatbots or help sections.
You can pop them up at common pain points or drop-off spots to help move things forward.
6 - Create a Feedback Loop
Implement mechanisms for continuously collecting user feedback during and after onboarding to improve the experience.
It could be through the in-app (in 5) or a standard contact us situation - either way, make it easy to connect back.
7 - Utilize Video Content
Use short, engaging video content to explain complex features or provide quick tours of your product.
People love short content and seeing hands-on interactions when it comes to using tech.
8 - Simplify the Process
To reduce friction and streamline the onboarding process, focusing on essential steps and information for new users.
Use (or implement if you’re not using) product analytics to signal your struggles and revisit steps to make the process easier.
9 - Segment Users
Segment users based on their behavior or role and provide customized onboarding flows to match their needs.
Hopefully, you already have the insights for this, but if not…another reason to implement your analytics tool!
10 - Continuous Learning
Encourage ongoing education through tips, tutorials, and updates within the app, keeping users engaged beyond the initial onboarding. Users will always seek more information.
If you have the tools mentioned above, you will be able to understand where people need the most training, which can be used to do long-term training to help the cause.
We often get so far into the weeds of managing features and stories that we forget how important those first few times someone new uses our products can be.
If your onboarding situation has been getting stale or, based on the feedback you receive, is just not the best - layering these tips into your approach will certainly steer you in the right direction.
